Making lists, and talking to veterans...

Typical of most things I get involved in, time is short and the crunch is on... Lucky for me, I have expert advice to tap into. Travis Newbold and Mike of the Ranum brothers, good guys I met at the first DirtQuake US in 2014...are racers and veterans of the LA-Barstow-to Las Vegas. They participated last year , and I blame them for my desire to participate this year. Travis said that "metal mender" and whiskey were two important components of his kit. Mike says if I can stay on course and on time...I shouldn't have to do any night riding...oh yeah, he says I'll need to purchase a "roll chart holder" to hold the course directions...(think I still have a compass somewhere in my back packing gear.. )

I hope the "metal mender" Travis mentioned was of the liquid metal in tubes variety, and not the full rescue welder kit...(though that does look interesting)

Thinking I better see if I can find one of those chart holders....

  1. just brilliant larry. my old man used to say, torch, hat, dry socks. anything else is just luxury. personally i would add a leatherman's, bivvi bag, water bottle and kendl mint cake, ultra small camp stove and gas bottle, [means to light it too] cuppa-soups / pot noodles [sorry, don't know u.s. alternatives] or army surplus rtion packs, [dead cheap] can make the difference of going to sleep warm and comfortable, or, shivering like a shitting dog, [just saying......]

    1. whiskey, welders,an wild, wild women....will drive you crazy...will drive you insane... or something like that. Tim, hats, socks, and torches...always good advice. part of the appeal of this little 2 day jaunt in the desert...is that the organizers carry along your gear bag...of course if you break down away from the roundevous point, you'd better have some gear along for the ride. Like I said, I have 'veterans'to advise me. looking forward to seeing the revised 'peaky blinder'.

  2. JB Weld is a miracle of modern science. Whiskey is a must, and I'd add PB Blaster (you can always huff it if you get lost) and a small, serviceable handgun to my emergency kit.

    1. Herm...I bought my first can of PB Blaster mainly because I liked the 'Snake oil salesman' charm of the colorful advertising printed on the can, touting all it's many uses and purposes. Turns out it's a pretty good product...(well, except that disastrous attempt at using it as a substitute for Brylcreem...). Triscuits are good, while out back country skiing I've enjoyed many a triscuit with cheese and salami...
Traveling with civilized chaps this trip...so don't think I'll need armament...and the roar of hundreds of dirt bikes will probably scare away any self respecting coyotes, road runners or rattle snakes....
