In this grainy photo, you can see the Sierra Nevada range to the East of Rancho Cordova. This is Sunrise Boulevard...that runs into Folsom Boulevard...at some time in the not so distant past, Pony Express riders used to gallop past here on their way to the state capitol of California....good ole Sacramento. That's snow in them thar hills...some of it fresh from a recent storm that passed through.
Unfortunately the smart fellers who know about things like snowfall and ground water...say this last storm was but a drop in the proverbial bucket. The Governor has mandated strict water policies for the coming year...and everybody is hoping for a better Winter coming...
Looking like I might not be planting tomatoes this year.....

ReplyDeleteYou probably know this, but one can use "gray" water to hydrate a few tomato plants without wasting the precious liquid.
Yeah...could do that Herm. A friend of mine in the foothills is going to put in some tanks to catch rain run off to augment his water needs for gardening. Not as critical for myself..but he has a couple of kids and animals to worry about. The county has informed the bosses in the school district I work in to get serious this year...talk of 35 per cent cut backs in watering...if a green area isn't being played on by the kids...it's gonna go brown, or be replanted with plants that aren't as thirsty as lawns.
DeleteWhen I lived in LA I could never understand why more people weren't more prudent about landscaping with gravel and drought-tolerant vegetation. Many also hosed down their driveways to clean them, which seemed completely ludicrous. Maybe if water usage rates are raised enough they'll buy push brooms.

ReplyDeleteI'm not on a meter at all, but always follow guidelines and do my part to conserve. I snapped the twister pic about a minute after I heard the warning on the work truck radio, felt like an unwitting storm chaser as I headed towards it. None of the funnels touched down in Rancho Cordova...but the same system dropped a funnel to the ground in the nearby City of Roseville about a half hour later...that tore up fences and did some roof damage. Keeping everyone on their toes out here...
